Dr Minette Smit

Minette is a distinguished economist and educator with over twenty years of experience in competition law and compliance. She was South Africa’s first Chief Economist at the Competition Commission, where she helped lay the analytical foundations for competition enforcement in the country.

Minette’s career spans academia, big firm economics, and legal practice, having served as Associate Professor of Economics at the University of the Free State, as an economist in Arthur Andersen’s Strategy, Finance and Economics team, and later as in-house economist at Webber Wentzel’s Competition Law Department.

As founder and a Director of Compliance Online, she has led the firm’s growth into a respected provider of expert compliance and regulatory training. Minette is deeply passionate about teaching and has designed, and delivered impactful compliance programmes to both private and public business entities.

She is the co-author and editor of A Practical Guide to the South African Competition Act (2nd ed., LexisNexis), and has published widely in academic and professional forums.

Marylla Govender

Marylla’s experience in the field of competition law spans more than 16 years.

She is an Executive Director of Compliance Online.

She holds an MCom (Economics) (Cum laude) and an MA (Econ) (Economics).

She has worked at the South African Competition Commission and at Arthur Andersen before spending time as an independent economic consultant to the competition law department of Webber Wentzel attorneys and Nortons Inc attorneys.

Since 2001 she has been involved in the economic analysis of a large number of high-profile cases across a wide range of industries before the Competition Authorities. She regularly lectures and conducts workshops on competition law.

Marylla is the co-writer of the Competition Law book, A Practical Guide to South African Competition Law (2017, LexisNexis Butterworths, Durban).

Elizabeth de Stadler

Elizabeth specialises in all things Consumer Law, POPI, plain language drafting and designing and delivering training.

She has a Masters (cum laude) in Consumer Law.

She is the editor of the Consumer Law Review and co-writer of A Guide to the Protection of Personal Information Act.

She is also the author of Consumer Law Unlocked, a co-author of the hefty Commentary to the Consumer Protection Act and wrote chapters on the Consumer Protection Act in The Law of Contract in South Africa and The Law of Commerce in South Africa.

She is co-founder of Novation Consulting and prides herself on bringing a fresh perspective to compliance issues.

Gerrit van der Merwe

Gerrit is CEO of Candor Governance, a corporate governance solutions provider. He is co-creator of GovN®, a governance methodology and integrated content framework. His specific interests lie in risk management, strategy and governance integration.

Gerrit is registered as a chartered accountant with SAICA. He holds a BCom and a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting.

Gerrit regularly presents on topics like the King Codes, ISO 31000 and Social & Ethics Committee legislation. He has done Risk Governance training for SAICA and facilitated Social & Ethics workshops for listed companies and South African state owned companies.

Before getting involved with corporate governance, Gerrit launched specialist finance house Mettle’s services into Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Botswana. He then headed Mettle’s European business from its London base.

Gerrit has been a board director in several jurisdictions, including South Africa, the United Kingdom, Spain, Luxembourg, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Carolynn Chalmers

Carolynn is a Corporate Governance advisor who specialises in the areas of IT, Information and Transition Governance.

She holds a BSc (Hons), MSc, CGEIT®, BRMP®.

Carolynn is a Director of Candor Governance (Pty) Ltd. She facilitates director development programmes for the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa and is a member of their Corporate Governance Network. Carolynn volunteers her time to the Institute of Information Technology Professionals of South Africa (IITPSA), being a member of their Social and Ethics Committee and Western Cape Chapter Committee.

Carolynn has extensive management and governance experience and has held various Chief Information Officer, Chief Technology Officer, Board, Board Committee and other Executive roles for international, listed and private organisations. Her experience spans many industries, including financial services, energy, construction, education, health, tourism, media and renewable resource management. Carolynn leads large multi-disciplinary teams ensuring all organisational aspects are engaged – people, process, technology, information, finance, risk, assurance and compliance.
